Blog 2/29

So it turns out that the Winter Park library has every article since 1954 that is even remotely related to Winter Park firefighting on file. I can't say that rifling through them all was particularly fun but it was definitely effective. We now have something like 20 sources which should be more than enough to build a solid thesis. The subject matter has shifted more toward dissent and conflict within the Winter Park Fire Department based on the type of information we were able to gather. the only problem now is that all of these sources are newspaper articles. I will have to look at the project directions and see if that is going to be allowed.

This week in History

This week my project partner and I made a lot of progress on our project. We found plenty of information at the Winter Park Library on the technology of the Fire Department. I look forward to searching through the archives at the fire department this weekend for further information so that we can finish the assignment earlier.
This week was very successfull for our group. My partner and I went to the Winter Park Community Library and found an astronomical amount of information on our subject. I suggest that anyone who is struggling to get information go there. Billy and I spent 6 hours there, but we split it up over a couple days. This weekend we plan on getting a head start on our paper this weekend. Goodspeed Out!

Project Blog

So, my partner and I decided to change our topic to famous Winter Park Fire Department figures. We are going to extensively research this weekend by going to the archives and to the station. I also think our individual interviews will be helpful in discovering other interesting information on the subject. I feel as if this topic is much better than our first one- women in the fire department. I am confident my partner and I will gain much knowledge this weekend. It will be nice to hand in the first draft in order to see the next steps in our project. I am excited to see the final product!

Project time

Shannon and I changed our topic to famous WP fire figures. We haven't done much work yet, however, this weekend we plan on going to the archives and station to gain knowledge. Thank you Chambliss for delaying the web page rough draft by a week! I am excited to find out how the fire station figures became famous and how they are remembered today.

Ashley and I begin

Today Ashley and I went to the archives in Olin Library and began sorting through documents, copies of newspaper articles, and photographs. There wasn't much on the Winter Park firefighting history, as there were on the great fires of Winter Park and a lot on Orlando firefighting. However, we did find some helpful material. An article all on the history will be part of our research. Also, the photographs of the first firemen crew. It also helps that the names were written on the back. So can use this to help further our research. We have a good beginning and I'm excited to see what else we can find.
Brittiany and I went to the Rollins library to find information and we did not get a whole lot. We were doing the cooperation and differences with the Winter Park and Oralndo fire departments and we could not find much relating to the Winter Park fire department. There was a book with a ton of information dating back to the 1800s about the Orlando fire department and all the fire chiefs but not much with Winter Park. Tomorrow we are going to the public library to see if they have more infomation than the Rollins library.

blooggggg....

Rachael and I spent some time in the archives of the Rollins library yesterday but couldn't find anything pertaining to the relationship between departments. Were going to try W.P. library on friday and some other places, and talk with some of the people at the station to try and get some substantial info. Hopefully we will find some good stuff in the next couple days. It seems like alot of our info is going to revolve around department policies and cooperation, like what Ginger Bryant covers in her chapter on "Mutual Aid."

blog #4

I promised last week that I'll blog twice to make up for what I forgot to do the week before last week, but I still forgot. Nicole an I went to the archives last Monday trying to find something on the mall fire, but there wasn;t much luck. Not to mention peer-reviewed articles, even the newspaper articles on that subject was scarce. We did find some photos after the mall fire, and the cause of the mall fire is still unknown. It is interesting, though, because the stores are not supposed to be opened on Easter Sundays (at least nowadays, it's not). We now have a vague idea of the scene of the fire, and we know that the fire department was praised for its quick response.
We went to the Winter Park public library today to find more articles. We obtained one great news article from Orlando Sentinel that seem to have a more comprehensive description on the fire. Because of its large size, it is hard to be photocopied. We were told to pick it up in digital form tomorrow at the library. Definitely looking forward to it

No Luck

My partner and I went to the school library today to research for our project, but archives was closed and the resource librarian said that she had doubts about fire engine history being within the library archives. In any case, she was most helpful by directing us to City Hall and the Winter Park Public Library. Tomorrow, Billy and I are going to hit those places up and hopefully have more luck.
I'm so sorry this is a bit late!

I actually really enjoyed our trip to the fire station. It was refreshing to have a day out of the classroom and see where the firefighters worked and lived, not too shabby.... nicer than the Rollins dorms. I think it will be interesting to go through all those journals and articles, hopefully they'll really pull me into the project.

Bloggggg

Going to the fire department was a lot of fun... it was really cool to see how everything is done behind the scenes since usually all I see are the trucks pulling into McKean slowly because the fire alarm has been pulled. I'm definitely going to go to the station again to research and go through the documents there, it seems like I can get a lot of info there.
The last secondary writing we just did was really boring and hard to write. The context of the reading was definitely not hard, but it was difficult to pull ideas solely from captions of the pictures. Hopefully the next one won't be like that.
I have FINALLY begun researching for the project which is good, considering the rough draft is due this week (I think). I need to stop procrastinating on this project!! I figure once I get going, it won't be so bad to put together. Hopefully it won't be too hard to find more information on our topic.

Friday, February 22, 2008

My partner and I went down to the Rollins archive on Monday to find things on the Mall Fire. They had a file just on the Winter Park mall which had a lot of articles for us to look though. From the information they had on the history of the Winter Park FD, I'm not sure if it had that much of an effect on the Department. We found around ten articles on the WP Mall and the fire, but they are just news clippings. I was looking though the file of the WPFD, and it didn't have any articles about the Mall fire. We are going to the archives at the WP library this weekend, and I think they will have some more information.

Blog 2/22

Julie and I have plans to meet this weekend and go through the Rollins archives. We have both had trouble digging up articles online so a lot depends on this trip since the last one was only somewhat successful. The digital archives only returned a couple of pictures of firefighters so far and some of them are not even dated. The only information on Winter Park firefighting available in the rollins database seems to be about the buildings on campus that burned down or the Seminole Hotel. In retrospect it seems silly to have expected any information relating specifically to our topic but I am worried about the fire station archives because I don't think they are computerized which means we will have to physically look at every piece of information, and very soon.

Project

This past week, my partners and I, have been doing research on our topic (the Seminole Hotel Fire) and we have discovered that is really hard to find information on the internet about this. There was almost no information about it, but I went to scholarly articles on Google, and it has a little bit of information, but not much. We are going to the archives this week, in order to gather more information about the fire in general, and more specific information, such as the causes, if there were any fatalities, how the fire department responded, and handled the fire. I also found the secondary reading exercise a little bit harder this week, since it was a picture book. But I did enjoy reading it, and I am looking forward to working on the project.

Blogger

After researching some information on our topic- Women in the Fire Department- my partner and I have decided to look into another topic. We were considering possibly some of the famous fire chiefs or famous fires. We feel as if one of these topics would provide a greater amount of information for our web page. We are going to try to make it back to the fire department to search through their archives in the next few days. Also, after Mrs. Bryant mentioned how the Olin library's archive sources are a great place to start, my partner and I will look there this weekend. It was great to hear Mrs. Bryant speak about her experience with the firemen. She made me want to do the same thing as she did. I enjoyed hearing about her first hand stories, both serious and funny. I also liked our secondary reading assignment in the book, Orlando Firefighting, better than the first two. I think the pictures told about the history and tradition of the fire department in an interesting manner. It helps to visually see what the fire department and the brotherhood are all about.
I thought it was really interesting going to the fire station. I was really impressed with the sleeping arrangements and how everyone got their own room. I expected to have one big room with many beds for everyone to sleep in. I was also hopeing that the fire alarm would go off and get to see the firefighters in action going off to the call. The wole fire station was very nice. For our project, Brittiany and I decided that we might include information with the relationship with the fire department and police department because we were not sure how much information we would be able to find on the relationship with the Orlando and Winter Park fire departments.

Blog

It was very interesting to tour the Winter Park Fire Department. I had never considered the inside of the station to be so homely. It was nice to see the botherhood first-hand. My partner and I have been talking about our topic- women firefighters -and we have decided to change the topic. The WPFD has a lot of information in their archives. We have two topics in mind: either a famous fire or a famous chief in WP. We are going to investigate at the station, as well as Rollins College archives for more information. I am excited to meet the retired firefigher and have been writing down questions to ask him. I just have to set up the interview.
I will agree that I was also hoping the alarm might go off while we were at the station Monday :) it would have been exciting. The trip down there actually made me think firefighting could be a neat job! Ha! Well anyway, Rachael and I are covering the relationship between OFD and WP, but we've been thinking about including the relationship between WP and the police too. From what we've found out so far, the relationship between FDs seem to be mostly cooperative and complimentary, whereas a lot of the "competition" seems to be between the FD and PD. We're going back to the station soon to get some current, first hand info. I guess if we have any extra time we might be able to swing by the PD and hear their side of things...just a thought.

And while im thinking...I found this latest writing assignment to be interesting because it wasn't an "article" like the others have been - it was a compilation of pictures. I think it just goes to show how much you can convey through photography!
Going to the fire station on Monday was a better experience than I thought it was going to be. It is such a nice house and I really like how workers there view each other as a family. It will make going there for research a fun and interesting time. I will admit I kind of was hoping that the alarm would sound so we could see them in action. They seem very organized, from daily schedules to having all the archives in one place. That too will help us in our project. Ashley and I are contacting each of our firefighters, and hopefully within the week we will have done our interviews. Which I am looking forward to doing.

Research

We have started the research for our project, but I think that we are still having a bit of trouble finding concrete information. There is some data in the Rollins Archives that looks promising. It is a bit strange not being able to find information on the internet. I am so used to doing research there, being an International Business major. Most of the financial data, recent industry information, etc. is all online. As a senior I made my first trip to the Rollins Archives... Anyway, We are just going to have to keep looking! I'm sure there is some good information in there somewhere. The stories that Ms. Bryant told the class about corruption, and the fire chief or firefighters burning down their own stores was interesting, so we are looking into that. She also had another good story, however, I can't quite remember what that one was... I should have written it down. Hopefully we will come across something good soon. We are planning to do quite a bit more research this weekend and begin writing the rough draft. Thats all for now.

I as well forgot to blog last week, well, I remembered but I had to be on a train right after my classes on friday and in the heat of the moment, forgot thereafter. So two blogs this week should bring me back on track. Today we went to the fire station to and got a tour of everything and got a quick look at the documents that are available to us for research. My team is researching the fire concerning Rollins College, so we are lucky in being able to have most of our resurces on campus in the archives here, but it seems that the fire station has a lot too. They actually had some pictures of Rollins College fires hanging up in the firestation. I think that my partner and I are going to start researching this week so we can get going on this project.

3rd blog

I forgot to blog last week so I'll just make two posts this week.
Nicole and I are working on the winter park mall fire. So far we don't know much about it other than it being the first fire in an enclosed shopping mall. We're planning on going to look in the archives this afternoon. They don't have much documented online before the 70's; it's pretty inconvenient...Hopefully we can find more information at the archive -- there shouldn't be a shortage of news articles on this fire, since everyone says "it's a big one" (although finding nothing online weeks before discouraged me a little bit). Today at the fire department I heard that the fire department themselves took pictures at the scene of fire, so I'm really hoping to find a lot of photos from there.
Anyways, there's a lot to look forward to. I have never done research on really paper before -- that's saying I have always been using the internet to do everything...but after hearing out the fire chief and the author of "Orlando firefighters", I'm feeling a little more confident now. Let's see how it goes at the archive todayXD

Fire Fraud Scandals

Dave and I are planning on researching fire fraud cases that have occurred in the Winter Park area in the last twenty or so years. The speaker last week gave us some good insight in what to expect from this topic. I find fire fraud scandals particularly interesting because of the investigative processes that insurance companies go through following each fire that occurs under their jurisdiction. For the purpose of our project, Dave and I intend to investigate a few of the most notable fire fraud scandals that have occurred in Winter Park. Hopefully our interview with a retired firefighter will give us great insight into the investigative processes that follow every fire that occurs in Winter Park.

4th Blog

I thought that Ginger Bryant was really interesting. I didn't know much about firefighting, but she really gave me a lot of insight. It seems like one of those jobs where you see so much that you become hardened to all those events. My partner and I have decided to research the Winter Park mall fire. I haven't really done any research specifically on the fire, but Bryant talked a little about the mall fire, and I am glad to hear that the archives has a lot of information about this fire. So, we will be going to the archives soon to find information.

Blog 4- Speaker & Project

Eventhough I completly forgot that the speaker was coming today it was a great experience. I thought she knew a lot about the fire departments around the area. I have yet to start on the research for the project so I should probably get on that. I dont think that my topic will be that difficult to research. All in all it should be a fun project

Blog 2/15

I haven't yet begun independent research on the topic of corruption within the Winter Park Fire Department but since the due date for a rough draft is coming up soon I think I'll get into that sometime this weekend. I'm dissapionted to miss the author's visit today but hopefully her book will be able to answer any questions that I may have posed in class. I had wanted to ask if she could reccomend any particular resources but it looks like I'll just have to figure it out on my own.

blog 4...speaker today!

I'm looking forward to Ginger Bryant coming in to speak today, and after looking through her book a bit, it is more than just pictures. Although I don't think her book will have tons of information pertaining to relationships between fire departments, it will still be helpful to read about (or see pics of) the original departments in Central Florida. Her chapter on "Mutual Aid" might be most helpful to Rachael and me since it talks about the creation of the Winter Park volunteer fire department to help take the load off of the Orlando dept.

Thursday, February 14, 2008

So last week the fire chief helped relieve some anxiety about this project. His enthusiasm made me feel like this is important to the fire department and they will appreciate our hard work. Im excited for the speaker tomorrow and after browsing through her book, i believe she will be an invaluable resource since she has done a lot of digging. I hope she can point us in the right direction as far as sources and research

4th Blog

I wont be in class tomorrow. Doctors orders. So i am very dissapointed that I wont be able to hear the speaker. I am willing to bet she has some awesome stories that will captivate her audience. In any event, I have already started researching (playing if you will) my topic, but have come up a bit short so far. I just logged onto the the fire departments website and it is a lot more exciting then i thought it would be. It is very informative with every aspect of the fire department. I have no doubt in my mind that I will love the project even more as i continue researching.

Fourth Blog

After hearing from the fire cheif last Friday I became more interested in finding out about the history of firefighting in winter park. Shannon and my topic is about women in firefighting. Unfortunately I we did not ask the firecheif anything about females in winter park firefighting. I have been to the website and skimmed through the pages. I look forward to researching more about this topic. I wonder if I can interview a retired women firefighter from winter park.

Project...

So I think we finally have a topic, now the hard part is finding information in the Olin archives to get going. I want to just get this project over with, since it doesn't seem too hard and is pretty interesting. Hopefully once Nick and I start finding information the project will go by pretty fast.
I'm excited for the author to come tomorrow...I think that will be a big help in getting the project going and knowing what to research. Right now I feel kinda stuck.

project

Since our project is figuring out the relationship between the Orlando and Winter Park fire departments I thought it was interesting what the chief mentioned last Friday. I expected there to be a lot more rival and not crossing into seperate boundaries like the police departments. I always had the idea that fire men were very tough acting and didn't let anyone get into their face or in their work place. For some reason I assumed that it would be the same between fire departments. I always knew there was a deep bond with all firemen but at the same time I figured there would be some kind of rivalry. I am excited to keep researching and finding out more information between the two.

Blog 4

I learned a great deal from the fire chief and about the winter park fire fighting department. It was great to see his enthusiasm for our project, which was encouraging and got me more excited to start extensively researching on our topic. I found it interesting to learn about the brotherhood among fire fighters. We read about this in our first secondary reading, but it was much better and influential hearing it from someone actually in the department. There is so much tradition in firefighting that continues to this day, such as the leather helmets and red fire trucks. I also enjoyed hearing about how Winter Park Fire Department is currently trying to make great changes, including the seat belts in the back of ambulences. The technology that is also available for firefighters who enter burning buildings is amazing. Finally, it was helpful to look at the Winter Park Historical website in class today. I also viewed it later on, which gave me a better idea of what this project consists of.

Blog 4

After listening to the fire chief last friday I became even more interested in the fire department of Winter Park. I really enjoyed how he was excited about our projects and gave us great answers to the questions we asked, and told all of us how much information there will be on the topics. That is a huge relief. Also, it was really cool to hear about research going into the seat belt standard for ambulances that this department is doing. I never knew about the injuries and deaths that were resulting from that, and having little Winter Park be at the forefront of that is pretty exciting. Im curious as to what the speaker on friday will share with us about her book..

Project Research

Now that Shea and I have finally decided on a project topic, corruption in the fire department, I have started research. Finding research on this topic may be problematic, however, because I have yet to find a credible article having to do with Winter Park or Orlando. There is plenty of data about the New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago departments, so I will continue to research and hopefully I will discover some good data sources soon. The articles that I have found have been very interesting and I look forward to doing more research and reading more articles that are just as interesting.

Blog 3

I guess I waited a little too long to write the blog so here it goes. I believe this project will run smoothly simply due to the fact that my partner and I are very good friends. since we are both history majors I think we will have a blast doing the research. Technology to me is always interesting when it has to do with the past weather its civilian or military technology. Also I really enjoyed listening to the fire chief on Friday.

blog

Sydney and i are doing this project together. It should be pretty easy splitting up work and finding time to meet since we are roommates and we know each other pretty well. We have decided to focus on the origins of the fire department because we are interested in its development in the community. Also, it will be interesting to see how much it has changed over time. I really enjoyed the fire chief and his enthusiasm about our projects

Saturday, February 9, 2008

My partner and I dont really have a set topic yet, but we are thinking of discussing the topic of historical fires or something of that sort. However, I dont know if two groups are allowed to do the same topic, so if someone has already claimed that one, then it looks like we will have to choose another. Is there a sign up sheet for topics? Or are we just to collaborate between ourselves with what we are going to do?

3rd Blog

Mengdi and I are partners for the firefighting research. I think that we are going to focus either on famous fires in Winter Park or the relationship of the WPFD and Rollins. We went to do research on anything related to the history of Winter Park or the WPFD. We looked in JSTOR and some other data bases, but we were having a hard time finding information. Hopefully, the sources at the WPFD will have a lot there for us to use. I thought that the fire chief was interesting to listen to. I didn't know how close the relationship was between Rollins and the WPFD. He seemed to suggest that has Florida, in comparison to other states, has better firefighting departments because of training requirements and certification. I'm not sure if firefighting has improved since these requirements were put in place, but he mentioned that only 60 years ago, firefighters were volunteers in Winter Park. Are they not considered as qualified to him?

Topic and whatnot

I'm working with Rachael and we want to look into the relationship between the Winter Park Fire Department and other Departments. I really enjoyed having the fire chief in class today, and after his talk it seems that Winter Park works pretty well with neighboring counties since they don't have to deal with such strict jurisdiction issues as the police do. Maybe talking to some other firefighters will provide some insight into whether or not any rivalries exist inside the department itself or between departments...since WP works so well with other firestations in the area, it may be more of a competitive spirit as opposed to a negative rivalry. Anyways, that's a start for now! :) Have a good weekend everyone!

fire chief

My group has been debating about what to do our project on, one of the ideas we had was a famous fire, that the Winter Park Fire Department has fought. The fire chief told us about a fire at Rollins around the turn of the century and gave us some insight about that. I found that very helpful. He was a very nice gentleman, and taught me somethings that I never knew about the fire department, and the history of firefighting in Winter Park. I also never knew why the fire departments used dalmatians. I also never knew that the firefighters helmets were leather. Having the fire chief come, helped me get more excited about the project, and also helped me realize how involved in the fire department is in Winter Park, and in the surrounding communities. I was surprised to learn that the fire department doesn't really know any boundaries and they will go and help wherever help is needed. I enjoyed the fire chief coming to talk in class today very much.

Possible Topic

My partner and I are actually thinking about investigating the famous fires that occurred right here at Rollins. We're been thinking about this for a while now and after listening to the chief that came in today talk, we thought it would be really interesting to research those fires. We have some other thoughts in our head as well, such as some other famous fires but we're still not sure about anything.
I really enjoyed listening to the chief today in class. I thought he was really nice and really knew what he was talking about. I thought he answered all the questions with many details and it wasn't boring.

Cutting it Close

Ok, so i know that this is kinda cutting it close or may even be a bit late, but i was waiting for the fire chief to come so that i could talk about what he had to say. I thought the fire chief was very interesting and knowlegable. After he spoke to the class, I finally pin pointed what I would like to do for the Web Page project. I think it would be beneficial and very intuitive to write about the change in firefighting/emergency technology. The fact that tiny Winter Park is behind a national change in ambulence layout/design is facinating. Also, how different the technology is today compared to 25-50 years ago blows my mind.

Blog 2/8

Brainstormning last night was actually more effective than I had expected it to be. My first idea was fire dogs. I realize after speaking with the fire chief this morning that the only real interest I had in fire dogs was finding out, well, what they were for. Of course there's the rumors that dogs can seek out fires better than humans because of their sense of smell but that doesn't really seem like a modern necessity. Someone actually asked about it in class and his response was that dalmatians are commonly deaf. Now I am even more confused. I don't understand how that comes in handy to firefighters at all. Talking about it did, however, help me to recognize that I'm really not interested in studying fire dogs, especially since the Winter Park Fire Department doesn't even have one.
The other topic that I'm thinking of researching is corruption within the fire department as it developed into an official organization. I read an article recently in the Orlando Weekly about Kevin Beary's retirement from the Orange County Police Department and all the outrageous abuses of power that went with his position as sheriff. Growing from a cooperation of volunteers to a department of federally employed professionals must have been a process with its share of profit seekers and exploiters too. It might be a little broad, but I think I'll look into it.

Project

Brittainy and I decided to do the relationship between fire departments. We are going to research and see if there are any types of rivalries between the departments or if they are more of a brotherhood. We thought it would be interesting to see if individuals firefighters had issues with departments or if it was more of a whole department having issues. These issues could include previous incidents or on going incidents of going into other departments territory. We are interested in their relationship and want to know if it is a more positive or negative thing.

project

robbie and i are going to focus on a famous fire in winter park

Project

Ashley and I have decided to do Origins of the Fire Department in the City. I think this will be very interesting to learn about because not only will we be learning about the fire departments history and how they got started, also how they have grown and expanded over the years. But also learn a little bit more about Winter Park's history as well. And I think it's important to learn more about this community, especially because i dont really know that much about it being from up north.

project

I'd like to further explore the brotherhood formed in a fire department. I've come up with some additional questions to the ones in the syllabus, as well as watched Ladder 49 (John Travolta movie...maybe the number is wrong. whatever) to look further at their friendship/brotherhood. I'd like to examine both the brotherhood of a specific department, as well as the feeling of national brotherhood with other fire departments across the country, as described in the article we read about firefighters and the response to September 11th.

I don't have a partner, so if anyone is also working along and would like to work with me, let me know! my email is mschutz@rollins.edu

Blog 3

I am excited to hear the guest speaker from the fire department tomorrow. My partner and I have decided on the topic of women and their role in firefighting. I am interested in learning more about this subject as I do not know too much as of right now. In order to evenly divide the project, my partner and I will first start looking for resources, discussing them, and bringing both of our ideas together. I think the speaker will also help in the process of forming ideas and getting the project off to a good start. It is also always better to hear first account experiences.

Third Blog

Shannon Reid is my partner for the Historic Winter Park Webpage project. We have currently decided to focus on the topic of women and the fire department. I am excited about this topic because women participating in the fire department community is rare. I am interested in the male firefighters viewpoint of female firefighters. As for dividing labor between Reid and I, we have decided to look for newspaper articles and any information about our topic and stay in touch with each other if we find anything interesting. We work well as a team.
Tomorrow is our guest speaker and I am interested in what he will talk about. Perhaps Reid and I will change our topic after he speaks tomorrow.

Project Topic??

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm having a tough time thinking up, much less deciding on a topic for this project. A few of the ideas that involve the equipment used, the risks and effects of the profession, "reading" the fire and determining the specific risks and possibilities of thermal accidents, volunteer versus career firefighters, the list goes on and on. However, I can't decide which topic will make the best project as well as be interesting to me throughout the semester. I am very excited to hear the firefighter speak in class tomorrow. It will be interesting to hear first hand experience of the "action." Perhaps he will inspire me or steer me towards a topic!

Blog #2

I'm excited to have the speaker come tomorrow to shake things up in class. It will be a nice change from the usual powerpoints, and it will definitely be a help in getting the project going. Hopefully the speaker will have some good information and guidance in the process.
I'm definitely ready to get this project going...I don't like having to wait around to start. The process seems really interesting, so picking a topic will help jump start the assignment.
I really hope we get our tests back tomorrow...I'm interested to see how I did. The test didn't seem too hard, but it'll be nice to know what Chambliss is looking for and how he grades for future references.

Second post

I thought that the test was ok, but I'm a little afraid after getting my paper back, especially because I didn't write as well on the test as I did on the paper! I think that the history book does a good job at setting the tone for each time period it covers. At first, I was a little worried because it seems to cover the same things in each chapter, but maybe a little more indepth. For example, in the Plessey v. Ferguson case, it mentions it in chapter 18. Then in chapter 19, the book mentions it again except more in depth. I felt like it should have gone in depth the first time it mentioned the case. I guess though, the book is trying to emphasize that each of these events are enduring, and history doesn't happen in segments.

superman and the imitations

So far this semester we have already spent a good amount of time covering Superman. it makes sense seeing as he is regarded as the most influential and first real superhero. we have also spent time covering the superheroes who were created after superman that are pretty similar and basically just knockoffs. i usually don't like the copies of superman but while i was buying my books i noticed that we will be reading about my favorite superhero, even though he is extremely similar to superman. Samaritan, whose name is also Asa Martin was created basically to be a very similar character to superman/clark kent. I have read some of the stories about him previously, and i am looking forward to the part of the course when we cover the material about him.

Test

At first I thought the test was going to be flooded with information from top to bottom. I realized however that the essay questions were broad with identifications that seemed easy enough. I still really do not have a solid idea on what I want to do for the website project.

Web Pages/Test

For the most part the test on Friday was not too bad. I found that many of the identifications required simply common knowledge and the essay questions were pretty broad, with many possible responses. It appears that in this week of class we will begin researching for our web page projects. The Winter Park Fire Department Chief is coming to class this week and he should provide the basis from which to begin our research. I am not too sure of what to expect from this project in terms of the level of difficulty. It seems that the Winter Park Fire Department has a pretty deep and rich history when it comes to major historical fires that occurred in the last half century.

The test on Friday went pretty well I think. I liked the format...I liked having to write an essay because it gave me a chance to explain what I know vs. multiple choice. The id's weren't bad either. I think I studied too many names and dates and next will study more "social concepts." However, the names and dates were helpful to back up my essay. Well...now its time to read more and get ready to start my project with my group.
Yeah~the test was okay. I use to dislike history classes because all that mattered was on DD/MM/YYYY what and what happened...now without the spending such a long time memorizing the date, just talking about the event and the significance is so much better! Yay for that~
So the only thing I need to hate right now is English.
And next time I'll remember to do the identification first. I was a little OCD on doing things in order. It BOTHERED me A LOT by having the essay question placed as the 1st question on the test.
I was writing like crazy, non-stop for 50+5 minutes, and barely finished the test. I really wanted to answer the Chinese immigrant question, but that was a lot of reading and I knew I would be slow on things, so I gave it a glance and gave it up. It wasn't history's fault; it was English's (all right~ I have to blame on SOMETHING~).
Although I've got the topics on the group project, I'm still uncertain where to start. I started looking at the winter park fire department web site, and it gave a brief description on its history. Knowing that Rollins was once burnt down to the ground is...interesting (I would choose a better word, but who uses a dictionary when blogging?) It wasn't until the 50's that they started emplying paid firefghters, and back then the firefighting equipment was a one-horse wagon that carried 500 feet of hose and an extension ladder.
Hopefully I can find more in-depth resources when I do more researchs later on.

Blog 2/1

I am an enormous fan of this testing style. Memorizing the exact date of every minor event of post civil war America was completely unnecessary. I am so glad that my days of name-the-date flashcards can be over. Time was a little tight but there's really nothing to be done about that so I can't complain.
As far as the project goes, I should probably read the handout that we got in class on Wednesday but I have yet to do so. This is going to be an active assignment so I shouldn't fall into the pattern of procrastination that's created a problem for me so many times in the past for far less involved projects.

blog. yay?

So after struggling tremendously to figure out how to work this thing, I have finally figured it out. It also helped that Chambliss added my email to the list. Technically, this wasn't my fault. Anyways this whole blogging thing is my new enemy. Well, maybe now I actually know how to use it, it won't be so bad...Not to mention, Dr.Chambliss officially thinks im technologically challenged.
The test today wasn't too bad...pretty fair, I'd say. And I was so excited that Candler was on there because I made a point to figure out who took over Coca-Cola. Well, excited may be an overstatement, but still.
Much to everyone's surprise, I AM excited for the GROUP project. I am not at all repulsed by my partner (as Chambliss said), this should be pretty fun. I'm excited to learn about the firefighters because I am interested in law enforcement and criminology...I guess fires will suffice for now. I think making the website will be interesting because I haven't ever worked on one before. Maybe my computer skills will improve...maybe.
I guess this wasn't so bad for my first blog. Yes, I said it. It may be nice to get a little history frustration out.

Test

So i feel like i studied too much for the test. it was really general information but i'm still not sure if i did that great. Im glad that he didn't put any real random questions from like the secondary text though. It was pretty straight forward but i'd rather be over prepared than not enough. Hopefully his tests will be consistent.

Second Blog

Alright well the test wasn't that bad. To say the least I am more excited for the historic research project. The list has some good topics and others that I'm not too interested but they all are better then some in my other classes.

TEST!!!

As of right now it is 12:55 on Friday morning and this test is really bogging me down. I hate not knowing what to expect and I am really anxious. Multiple guess/choice would make me a little more comfortable since I can use stratagy to answer questions I am really uncertain of. Yet this whole essay/identification thing has really put the butterflies in my stomach. No matter how much I study, I cannot seem to lower my anxiety. Oh well, all I can do now is hope for the best and do my best. In any case, this was a nice break from studying.
