After reading entirely through the 1888 Winter Park travel brochure, i came to the conclusion that Rollins was being pushed as a school for the sons and daughters of wealthy northerners. In that time period, many people who suffered from chronic ailments were told by physicians to go south in search of a temperate climate. This idea attracted Winter Parks original inhabitants, and in turn formed Rollins College into an institution designed to cater to to needs of its privileged northern students. Generally speaking, the vast majority of Rollins' first students were part time residents of Florida and would travel back north for the summer. Over time, gradually more students at Rollins became year round residents of Winter Park, and Florida in general. Today Rollins maintains a 50/50 in state to out of state student percentage.
